2. Alba, ae, f. (verwandt mit albus, ἀλφός, sabin. alpus, mhd. »die Albe«, d.i. schneeiges Hochgebirge), I) Name mehrerer hochgelegener Städte, von denen bes. merkwürdig: A) mit dem Beinamen Longa, die älteste latinische Stadt, nach der Sage von Askanius erbaut, Mutterstadt der Römer, auf einem schmalen, langgedehnten Hügelrücken (dah. Longa) an der Südostseite des Randes, der den Albanersee einschließt, den höchsten Gipfel des mons Albanus im Rücken, bei dem jetzigen Kloster Palazzuola, die zur Zeit ihrer Blüte viele Kolonien in die umliegende reich gesegnete Gegend sandte, aber schon unter Tullus Hostilius von den Römern aus immer zerstört wurde, s.
